Monday bento – sandwiches

I made us sandwich bentos for lunch last Monday. I used up the last of the barbecue chook and made mostly chicken sandwiches. Left to right: kaya (coconut jam); curried chicken with mixed greens; chicken with mayo and mustard, barbecue chicken stuffing and lettuce; curried chicken with cucumber. You may notice I made the filling […]

A big bowl of fried rice

For dinner last Sunday night, Jac made a batch of fried rice so we could use up some leftover barbecue chicken. In the fried rice: chicken, corn kernels, spring onions, green beans, mushrooms, carrots, onions and garlic. Oyster sauce and soy sauce provided the main flavours.

Sunday afternoon at the shops

While we were out at the shops last Sunday, we bumped into my sister Juji and her boyfriend Jay. We all decided to grab a bite to eat together. Juji and I each had a teriyaki chicken bento set (AU$13.90) from Nagano Sushi. It’s a really good feed with rice, chicken, prawns (one tempura and […]

Lunch bar food

Last Saturday, Jac grabbed us lunch bar burgers for brunch. I had a hamburger with lettuce, tomato, fried onions and barbecue sauce. I thought it was great that the beef pattie was the same size as the lightly toasted soft, chewy bun. It was a simple burger, but absolutely delicious. Jac had the same, but […]

Secret Santa

Why I hate Secret Santa I really hate doing Secret Santa (some people know it as Kris Kringle), but it’s something my team at work does every year. There’s usually a $ limit – this year it was $10 – and you buy a gift for the person whose name you pick out of a […]

Lunching alone

A busy day last Friday and I had lunch rather late – for me, anyway – after 1pm. I’m usually starting to get hungry and thinking about what to have for lunch well before 11am! I didn’t have time to eat out, so I grabbed a quick takeaway fish katsu and rice (AU$8.80) from Sushi@Royal […]

Welcome cakes

One of my workmates, P, has moved house recently. His new neighbours are two chefs, who gave him a welcome gift of little cakes – P brought them in to work to share with us. I don’t know what any of the cakes were, as I didn’t try any, but I took these photos for […]

Meatballs and rice

This was my lunch last Thursday, a large meatballs and rice takeaway (AU$7.20) from 88 Royal lunch bar (88a Royal St, East Perth). I’d eaten this meatball dish once before and loved it – I’ve said previously it tastes very much like a dish my late grandma used to cook when I was a child. […]

Three teriyaki takeaway dinner

I got three small teriyaki and rice dishes from Taka’s Kitchen (corner Barrack and Wellington Streets) for Jac and me to share for dinner last Thursday night. They were $5.00 to $6.00-something each – a cheap and tasty feed. First: teriyaki beef. The beef looked very roughly chopped and I thought it would be tough […]
