Ba Ba Black, East Perth

Ba Ba Black is one of my favourite East Perth cafes for breakfast with friends before work. Ours is a simple formula: good food + good coffee + open at 7am. Since we work close to this part of town, we can meet up, enjoy a hot breakfast and a good catch-up, yet arrive at our respective offices at a reasonable time.

L and I both ordered scrambled eggs, bacon and toast (AU$14). I hadn’t been to Ba Ba Black for almost two years (really?!) and was really looking forward to their scrambled eggs: a generous, soft, creamy cascade piled high on two slices of thickly cut toast. And the bacon, with its tasty strip of glorious melty fat. Just a little cracked black pepper on the eggs… oh yes, bacon and eggs is another of life’s heavenly combos.

Chad ordered poached eggs on toast (AU$9.50). Poached eggs always look so odd and tiny on a plate when they’re not smothered in hollandaise sauce and with layers of ham or smoked salmon and spinach. These eggs, small yet bulbous and bursty, sat on top of what looked like two mini mattresses made of wholemeal bread. After a quick cracking of pepper, Chad plunged right in and declared her eggs perfectly gooey in the middle.

When I’m out for breakfast, I usually order scrambled or fried eggs sunny side up, but scrambled is my favourite, Chad usually orders poached. Not sure if L has a preference. Jac’s long-time favourite is eggs Benedict but lately she’s been getting right into omelettes. What’s your usual breakfast eggs order?

The girls enjoyed their coffees. The soy milk served with my English breakfast tea had soy floaties in it which I don’t care for, but sadly, have grown accustomed to being served from time to time. Baristas everywhere, you probably think soy milk drinkers are a pain, but please remember to shake the soy milk carton vigorously before pouring!

We sat at a table outside and caught up on each other’s news, enjoying a nice bit of breaky before work as East Perth woke up around us.

The service was exactly what I prefer early in the morning, and much appreciated: efficient delivery of food and caffeine without chatter.
