Short stories: Cuban Sandwich Co

UPDATE: Cuban Sandwich Co is no longer trading. What a shame!

Yesterday was the first day of summer. Jac and I met my sister Juji and her hubby Jay for lunch at Jeff Joseph Reserve, Ardross Street near Applecross Jetty where the Cuban Sandwich Co van was parked from 12 to 1pm.

I’ve blogged about these guys and their magnificent sandwiches before. For AU$9 you get a sandwich made fresh to order: a soft chewy bun (lightly toasted if you prefer) lined with sliced jalapenos and crisp cos lettuce, filled generously with secret-recipe sweet spiced slow-cooked pulled pork shoulder and lashings of garlicky aioli. For an extra dollar, you can grab a bottle of water.

The van is regularly at Applecross Jetty; Barbagallo ballpark in Thornlie during baseball season; Curtin University as part of the Park’d Food Trucks initiative; markets and events. The best way to find out where the Cuban Sandwich Co will be next is to follow them on Twitter, Facebook or check their website.

I’m not really much of a sandwich person. If there’s a choice between a sandwich and any other kind of carb with protein – rice, potatoes, pasta, pie… the bread’s usually the one I’ll pick last. But this Caribbean pork sandwich is worth chasing around town. Guys, if you could park next to an ice cream truck next time, it would be perfect!

Stay tuned for more of my favourite sandwiches and food trucks, and feel free to share yours. Here’s to another great summer in Perth.
