City Farm Cafe, East Perth – breakfast

I met my two friends Chad and L for breakfast at City Farm Cafe, East Perth last month. Breakfast, friends and bacon, a great way to start the day!

L ordered fruit toast (AU$6) with sides of bacon (AU$3) and maple syrup. Chad decided that sounded good and ordered the same.

I ordered the homemade baked beans and toast (AU$10) with a couple of extras: one poached egg (AU$2) and a side of bacon (AU$3).

My poached egg was just perfect. I gently poked it with my finger and it wobbled enticingly. I pierced it with my fork and the bright orange gooey yolk oozed out over my beans. The baked beans were tasty, with soft tomato and onion, a spicy Mexican/Spanish-style flavour with a mixture of different beans – I spotted broad beans, red kidney beans, chickpeas… I started tucking in greedily and then realised – they’d forgotten my bacon!

A quick chat with our very apologetic waiter, and very soon a plate of sizzling bacon was delivered to me by the very apologetic chef.

We were told that City Farm’s bacon comes from Mondo Butchers – home of magnificent hot roast meat sandwiches on Saturday mornings. This bacon had a wonderful streaky balance of meat and soft salty fat.

Chad and L devoured their bacon and fruit toast. L drizzled maple syrup on her bacon while Chad daintily dipped her bacon into her dish of maple syrup.

At City Farm, they don’t have table numbers, they have animals instead. We were “the elephant table”.

I can’t stop looking at that perfect gooey poached egg oozing into those spicy baked beans.

My previous City Farm posts

But wait, there’s more!

Now that winter has finally arrived, the summer lunch special quiche of the day has been replaced with the pie of the day. I’ve been hanging out for City Farm’s delicious homemade pies. I kicked off my winter pie reunion with this beauty: chicken and mushroom pie served with salad (AU$12).

The pie was full of tender chicken and mushroom pieces in a tasty gravy. I gave my workmates total lunch envy that day!

I’ve also been chuffed to see the inclusion of freshly baked savoury muffins along with the sweet muffins every day.

Here’s a recent savoury muffin I grabbed for takeaway breakfast: Spinach and feta muffin topped with chef’s special tomato relish.
