Gopi Curry Leaf, Willetton

Gopi Curry Leaf in Willetton was one of my Top 5 Perth eats of 2010.

I love that we found out about Gopi Curry Leaf from the manager of our local Hungry Jack’s store! You could easily drive or walk past and never even notice it’s there, let alone think of going in.

We returned to Gopi Curry Leaf for breakfast a couple of Sundays ago.

We got there after 9am and grabbed the last free table. I mentioned previously that Gopi is a small shop, with seating for approximately 15 people. By the time we were halfway through our meal, the little shop had reached its seating capacity, a small queue had formed at the door and there was a steady stream of locals dropping by for takeaway meals. Like the last time, the clientele was mostly Asian, which is always a good sign for an Asian restaurant.

We ordered a few dishes to share. First, egg prata with onion (AU$5) cooked fresh to order and served with a bowl of chicken curry gravy.

The curry served with the roti had a watery consistency – I much prefer a thicker curry gravy – but it was tasty. We tore the prata into pieces (ow ow, hot hot!) to dip into the curry and yes, as regular readers have come to expect, I drank the gravy too.

We also shared a nasi lemak (AU$6).

With the nasi lemak you get a piece of fried egg (not a whole fried egg), cucumber, peanuts with ikan bilis (little anchovies), sambal, spicy fried chicken wing. It’s a delicious combo with curry and makes a tasty breakfast, but be warned: the rice is not lemak and does not taste of coconut. It satisfied my craving for rice and something hot and savoury for breakfast, but not a nasi lemak craving.

While ordering at the counter, Jac rather liked the look of one of the curries in the bain marie and ordered a serving even before she knew what meat it was! It was goat, which I love in curry. The meat was tender, the gravy delicious and even more drinkable than the chicken curry. Jac was chuffed with herself for ordering the “mystery” curry!

Jac also ordered teh tarik (pulled tea, AU$2.50).

The prices have gone up since my post last year, but it’s still a great cheap feed of simple home-style fare.

A while ago, one of my friends went to Gopi Curry Leaf for breakfast on a weekend and told me they’d printed out my original blog post – seven pages when printed on A4 paper, all displayed in their front window. Although it wasn’t a surprise, it was still a strange feeling seeing it there. It was even more surreal to then see a family get out of their car, stop to read the post while pointing at the pictures making “ooh” and “yum” noises before going inside!

If the Gopi Curry Leaf staff recognised me, they showed no sign. Which was fine with me – I do get recognised from time to time – I guess when I’m pointing my camera at my food it’s a dead giveaway. I don’t mind at all when people come up and say hi but I’m still very bashful when that happens.

Hurrah for Gopi’s weekend breakfast special opening hours! But I’ve said before and I’ll say it again: Perth needs more Asian breakfast places that open early – and not just dim sum either – I love dim sum, but I love a hawker or kopi tiam-style breakfast – kaya toast, soft boiled eggs, nasi lemak, wantan mee, hokkien mee, fish ball soup, I could go on…

Gopi’s nasi lemak probably won’t satisfy a nasi lemak craving, but we love the roti, rolled and slapped onto the hotplate, cooked fresh to order and served with curry. Almost a year later, I’m still a Gopi fan.
