Introducing… Truffle

Meet Truffle, our new 8-week-old tabby kitten. We got her yesterday from the Cat Haven.

She is named after Jac’s favourite chocolate, a raspberry truffle.

Truffle is very small and skinny with long legs and big feet

She is full of energy. It’s been a challenge getting decent photos of her as she doesn’t stay still for long.

We’ve done a lot of reading about how to introduce a kitten to an adult cat and are keeping Truffle and Pixel apart to begin with.

Pixel has seen Truffle from a safe distance (she hissed at her). It hasn’t put Truffle off though – there have been just a couple of brief encounters from a distance – Truffle is very interested in Pixel and clearly wants to make friends. But we’ll take it slowly to allow Pixel to get used to our new family member. Pixel’s definitely been lonely without Billy Lee but it’s only natural that she’ll be territorial at the sight of a new cat in the house (even a little one).

We’ve set up the second bathroom as Truffle’s room for now, with food and water, a litter tray and a cosy mat to sleep on. So last night Truffle slept in there with the door closed, while Pixel slept in her usual spot at the end of our bed. When we woke up this morning, Pixel chirped at us as usual, gave us a kiss and enjoyed her breakfast – we gave her roo and lamb mince for a treat. Cat and kitten ate their breakfasts in separate rooms, as per our plan to keep them separate initially.

Truffle’s settling in very well. She’s eating, using her litter tray and enjoying exploring her new home. She purrs when she eats, when she plays and whenever you give her a cuddle. She’s such a little sweetie. She loves company and is happiest when she’s with Jac and/or me. We hope in time that will extend to Pixel too.

Right now, Pixel’s snoozing in her favourite spot in the garage on top of our storage crates while Truffle’s hanging out in the lounge with Jac.

We still miss Billy Lee and talk about her a lot. Billy Lee will always be Big Girl in my mind, but it’s funny – Pixel now looks so huge and fat compared to skinny tiny spindly-legged Truffle.

Give us a bit of time; I’ll update you on how things go with Pixel and Truffle.
