Bacon and egg roll – and eating favourite bits last

A lightly toasted sesame seed knobby bun, filled with bacon, egg with a soft, gooey yolk, and tomato sauce.

Just look at the egg soaking into the bread, and the four layers of bacon!

Bacon and egg roll

A perfect mouthful.

I love buns that have a knob on top. I believe the proper name for these buns (well, according to what I see at bakeries) is “knot rolls”. I call them knobby buns because I think of the little bump on top as a knob. I like eating the knob best of all, and last of all.

When I was a kid, I always saved my favourite bits to eat last, so I could take my time, eat them on their own and really savour the tastes and/or textures that I loved so much. I did this with pieces of chicken especially. We’d typically have dinner consisting of a piece of chicken (or two, if they were particularly small pieces), some stir-fried vegetables and rice. I’d eat the rice with the vegetables and save the chicken to the end so I could eat it all by itself, tasting and enjoying it on its own without the flavour of anything else. I did the same with beloved dishes like minchee – the rice and vegies would be consumed first, and quite quickly – the minchee would be eaten slowly, at the end. :)

These days, when eating KFC, I take the skin off my chicken pieces and leave it all in a pile on the side of the plate to eat last, on its own. Do any of you guys do something similar with your favourite foods? Or do you do the opposite – dive straight in and devour your favourite bits first of all?

Time for bed – big day tomorrow, Jac’s brother’s wedding. I’m wearing a dress – eeek!
