Review: The High Road Bistro (Part 2) – Main courses

I must say the first thing I thought about when I realised there would be seven of us dining was the food photo opportunities! I promised everyone that I would take the photos of their food very quickly, and so they were happy to cooperate. So let’s begin. K’s mum ordered one of the daily specials: grilled barramundi brushed with garlic and basil butter, served with hand-cut chunky potato chips, AU$14.00.

K’s dinner: scotch filet (250 grams), cooked medium rare, served with peppercorn sauce and hand-cut chunky chips. AU$16.50. According to K, her steak was perfectly medium rare.

Jac’s dinner: Jac’s dinner: grilled salmon steak, bok choy and potatoes drowned in served with hollandaise sauce. AU $17.50. Sorry, I know this isn’t the best photo. Jac said her fish was very nice, but she did think there was a little too much sauce. Edit: She also mentioned that the sauce tasted like a premade packet sauce like the sort they use at Fast Eddy’s. It definitely wasn’t made from scratch in the Bistro’s kitchen.

B(K’s partner, Jac’s brother)’s dinner: Chicken Caesar Salad, AU$17.00. Also available without chicken for AU$13.00. B said it was very good. It looked pretty damn good to me.

K ordered one kids’ meal between the two kids, knowing that M, who is 2 and a half, would be far more interested in playing than eating. The High Road Bistro has a kids’ menu of four dishes: fish and chips, nuggets and chips, sausages and chips and something else with chips (sorry, I didn’t write it down and have forgotten). S, aged almost seven, chose the fish and chips, AU$ 7.50.

Here’s the fish and chips, all tartared up. Those of you with extremely dirty minds may indeed think of the porniness of this photo (that’s all I’m saying!). Jac sneaked a piece of fish and said it was really good.

My dinner: New York Fettucine (not sure why New York) – fettucine pasta, sundried tomatoes, snowpeas, chunks of chicken, bacon and mushrooms in a creamy sauce. This was the main size, AU $17.00. Also available in entree size for AU$13.50. I shouldn’t order creamy dishes (as it blocks up my head with phlegm afterwards) but I couldn’t resist, it sounded too good on the menu. It was worth the blocked head too – the creamy sauce had a beautiful flavour, with just the right amount of garlic, and there was a generous amount of sundried tomato (which I love) and chicken. The mushrooms were cut to just the right size – they still had their mushroominess. My only gripe was with the snowpeas, which had been slivered. But overall, this was delicious and I would have it (and blocked up head) again!

The High Road Bistro has quite an extensive menu and some tempting specials, such as the veal scallopine with mushroom sauce, served with new potatoes and beans, and the lamb and mushroom in red wine pie with chips. They have other delicious-sounding dishes such as pork parmigiana and garlic prawns (oil-based, not cream-based sauce), served with rice. They also do woodfired pizzas there – perhaps a return visit for that may be a goer sometime :).

So, what do you reckon? Any of the dishes look good to you? I think the chef/chefs were a little too enthusiastic with using paprika as a garnish to be honest!

Coming up: sweets.
