Another Saturday Brunch

Between the time I rang MK and actually bought the custard puffs, Jac and I had brunch. We’re savoury rather than sweet people, and so custard puffs, although appealing, just wouldn’t cut it as breakfast food for us.

We chucked a few laps trying to decide where and what to eat. Jac sort of felt like eggs with hollandaise sauce, something like eggs benedict or florentine. I wanted something with hot chips. We went to Dome, but the queues were horror-long and there appeared to be no free tables. Miss Maud, which is right near Beard Papa did eggs benedict but no hot chips. Whenever we’re at a shopping centre looking for something to eat we always end up walking around indecisively in circles getting even hungrier, which is very bad because I’m usually really hungry to begin with.

We ended up walking out of the main shopping centre entirely and going to Fast Eddys. We haven’t been to a Fast Eddys in ages. We’ve been to Fast Eddys in Carousel and the city and joked that they should change their name to Slow Eddys (I’m sure quite a few people who’ve eaten there have felt the same way on certain occasions), but today, Fast Eddys Morley wasn’t too bad.

Jac ordered the eggs benedict (AU$15.95) which came with two hash browns and a glass of orange juice (a teeny weeny glass). When I look at egg yolks like that, I just want to pop them!

And just because I can, here’s a closer view of the eggs benedict. For some reason I always thought the eggs in eggs benedict are usually poached. It didn’t matter to Jac anyway, she demolished them.

Jac also ordered a garden salad (AU$5.50). According to her the dressing was a ranch-style one, and quite tasty.

I ordered the chicken burger (AU$13.95), which came with chips on the side. I also ordered a side serve of garlic mayo (quite pricey for a sauce on the side, at AU$2.55). I usually just have tomato ketchup with my chips (which is available for free), but given my recent/current obsession with aioli, I just had to order the garlic mayo.

Chicken burger

I’ve always liked the Fast Eddys chicken burger – the chicken filet is crumbed and really crispy on the outside. I thought the mayonaise in the burger tasted like the generic cheap-and-nasty commercial mayonaise that comes in large tubs, which lunch bars tend to use. It was very thin and much too sweet, with an odd flavour that reminded me strangely of banana (a little disturbing in a chicken burger!). I’ve eaten at Fast Eddys before and had the most amazingly fresh hot chips, but today the chips didn’t taste very fresh at all (not quite cardboard, but definitely getting there), which was a shame. Luckily the garlic mayo was very good and did a great job of masking the cardboardiness. Despite the bananary* mayo in the burger and the sad chips, I did enjoy my meal, thanks to the super crispy chicken filet and that garlic mayo. I’m quite a fan of burgers, as you may have noticed.

Seeing what we ate for brunch you can probably now understand why we were too full to eat a Beard Papa puff each.

Note: I think I’m a bad luck charm for Jac’s hockey club. I’ve been to three matches recently, and in each one the team from her club has lost – badly. Maybe I’m not destined to be a dutiful hockey wife after all. Heh.

*Yet another word I made up.
