A quiet new year’s eve dinner

We didn’t do anything exciting for new year’s eve. We were happy to just stay home. Jac did a bit of cooking and I played my Nintendo DS (I’m currently hopelessly addicted to Animal Crossing: Wild World). We had a relaxing evening with a delicious dinner (the good bit), followed by um, something not so relaxing (the bad bit). Details below.

The good bit

Jac assembled a platter of vegetables and dip – carrot, cucumber, tomato, snow peas, orange capsicum and asparagus, with aioli.

We also enjoyed fresh baguette and tasty cheddar.

Bread and cheese

We ate the last of the barbecued pork ribs, which were even better than before.

We were actually asleep by the time the year was about to tick over, but the voices of people at the party across the street shouting the countdown to 2009 woke us up. And when the fireworks started going off, we got up to make sure the cats were okay, which they were.

The bad bit
Unfortunately, a little later, sleep was interrupted again as Jac had to get up to be, um, very noisily sick. Put it this way, when she was ready to go back to sleep again, she did so with a bucket by the side of the bed. In addition to this, she also confessed to having abdominal pains. I was supposed to be at work the next day but stayed home to look after her (I did manage to do a couple of hours worth of work while she slept in the morning. In the end, I reckon it was good that I stayed home, as I was very tired from night’s ‘events’). Later that day, we went to see the doctor, who said the throwing up was probably a touch of food poisoning* but the pains are probably related to something else. Jac’s had blood taken for a number of tests and is booked in for an abdominal ultrasound next week.

Don’t worry, she is OK – she’s went to work last week, but has just been taking things easy. She’s still had a bit of a sensitive tummy though, and has been eating fairly conservatively (I’ve been fine, and devouring everything in sight as usual). We’ll know more soon. I’ll keep you posted.

*Interestingly, Jac and I had eaten pretty much all the same food for the past day or two, but she was ill and I wasn’t. This has happened a number of times over the years we’ve been together. Not surprisingly, I’m always happy to eat food that’s a few days old (that’s been refrigerated/stored properly, of course) but Jac’s quite paranoid about eating old food and will leave it all to me. I guess I have the *luckier* tummy. :-D
