Mokka Fresh & Yummy, Bentley

Update, August 2011 – Mokka Fresh & Yummy appears to have closed down

I’m always keen to try new cafes and restaurants, especially cheap and cheerful eateries hidden in the suburbs and buried in shopping centres. The newest cafe in the Bentley Centre is called Mokka Fresh & Yummy. I’m usually a little suspicious of neighbourhood cafes with comprehensively international menus; I just wonder how good the food will be. Remember the Dream Cafe from Seinfeld? Mokka Fresh & Yummy’s menu is not quite as global as the Dream Cafe’s (franks and beans, tacos, turkey salad and rigatoni!) but it does feature curry, rice, noodles, ham and cheese sandwiches, burgers, lasagna, and fish and chips!

We had brunch at Mokka Fresh & Yummy a few weekends ago.

We weren’t in the mood for typical breakfast/brunch fare – we skipped over the breakfast section of the menu (raisin toast, bacon and eggs on toast and fry-up options).

Jac ordered the T-Rex burger (AU$13.90), a double beef burger with bacon, egg, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and a special “T-Rex” sauce. The T-Rex sauce was a thick, dark and sticky sweet soy-based sauce. The beef patties were juicy and there was a decent amount of salad. Jac was very pleased with her choice. I had a couple of bites too. The T-Rex burger is the most expensive of Mokka’s burgers, presumably due to the double beef – the Pommy Burger at Jus Burgers features fresh Amelia Park beef, cheddar and back bacon and costs $13. The other burgers on Mokka’s menu (beef, chicken, fish) range from just under $8 to just under $10.

I wanted nasi lemak but was disappointed to be told it was not available at breakfast time “because there is no demand for it.” But most of the other Asian meals on the menu were available, and I chose curry chicken and rice (AU$7.80).

The presentation of the curry wasn’t so impressive but the size of that messy bowl got me excited! The curry was sprinkled with crispy fried shallots and smelled wonderful. The tasty gravy reminded me of my mum’s chicken curry (although I must say nothing beats Mum’s curry – I’m sure everyone says that about their mum’s curry!). The potato needed more cooking, but the chicken drumstick and thigh were both very tender.

I spooned gravy over the rice. That gravy was absolutely drinkable and yes, I drank!

Jac also ordered an iced coffee (AU$4.80) which came in a tall glass with a big bobbing scoop of vanilla ice cream and fresh cream piped on top. It was milky, sweet and refreshing.

Mokka Fresh & Yummy is located in the Bentley Centre, next to Woolworths supermarket. A few customers simply wheeled their trolleys filled with shopping right up to the front counter to order their coffees. We enjoyed our breakfast. I hope Mokka Fresh & Yummy sticks around for a while so I can return to try more of its dishes – crispy skin chicken with rice, nasi lemak, laksa noodle soup and the coco burger (coconut crumbed fish with lettuce and special sauce) all sound good to me. Maybe I will throw caution to the wind and try their lasagna (or maybe not)!

I love curry for breakfast! My favourite place for curry and roti for breakfast on a weekend is Gopi Curry Leaf in Willetton. We had breakfast at Gopi recently too – I’ll post the new write-up soon.

And thanks to everyone who’s commented – here at the blog, via email, on Twitter and at Facebook – on my recent post: On food bloggers and restaurant reviews. Thank you for all your feedback.
