Macarons, Jean Pierre Sancho, Perth
After my delicious breakfast of slow-cooked eggs, wild mushrooms and grilled polenta and fresh orange juice at Greenhouse, I felt like a nice cup of tea and something sweet.
Ever since I saw Jean Pierre Sancho’s brightly coloured macarons at the Good Food & Wine Show Perth I couldn’t get them out of my head.
So now I headed to Jean Pierre Sancho on Hay Street in search of macarons.
The macarons were just being placed in the display when I joined the queue. Coffee with chocolate or almond croissants seemed to be very popular orders.
I asked what flavours the macarons were and was told (by a staff member with a French accent that I could listen to all day :)) strawberry, vanilla, jaffa and pistachio. I ordered two: strawberry and jaffa.
I couldn’t take my eyes off the macarons’ vibrant colours and the cream filling peeping out between the bright shells. They smelled deliciously of strawberry, chocolate and orange. Which to taste first?
Macarons and tea, with nowhere else to be – this is happiness.
I took a bite of the speckled jaffa macaron first. The crisp shell cracked under my teeth. The meringue was light and airy, the creamy centre sweet. My second bite was the strawberry macaron. Third bite, jaffa. Fourth bite, strawberry again. Another bite each and they were all gone. They tasted as good as they looked. The tea was good old Twinnings.
I must admit I thought about staying for lunch and ordering one of JP Sancho’s crusty bread rolls filled with champagne ham and brie, or with chicken, salad and homemade Dijonnaise. A mouthwatering thought! Another time.
So far I’d had a lovely day off. But there was even more indulgence to come…
