Weekend barbie

On Sunday evening we went to a barbie at the home of a couple of our friends Lou and Dan. They put on a fantastic feast. All we had to do was bring our drinks. We started with barbecued prawns, which were deliciously juicy and bursty. I had to exercise great self restraint and stop myself from just steam-shovelling them into my mouth (like Homer Simpson stuffing his face with brownies in the episode Homer’s Barbershop Quartet).

We had a choice of multigrain or white bread rolls…

I love the sight and smells of a loaded barbie. At the back – sausages; in the front – Portugese and lemon pepper chicken, and sliced zucchini (courgette) and sweet potato. Dan had an interesting cooking technique for the vegetables -he poured beer over them.

Lou and Dan are big chilli/spicy food fans. I didn’t actually try any of this Thai beef salad, as I’m a pathetic chilli wuss. According to Jac (and even Dan), the salad was blow-your-socks-off hot, so I was rather glad I didn’t try it. The dressing was made with fish sauce, soy sauce, lots and lots of chilli and garlic.

Here are the steaks on the barbie.

For those who weren’t into the spicy salad, there was a lovely Greek-style salad. I’ve never been a fetta cheese or olive fan, but everything else was fresh and crisp and went well with my barbecued meats.

The two types of chicken – left, lemon pepper; right, Portugese.

The barbecued vegies turned out sweet and soft.

And here is my plate, at round one.

It was nice to catch up with friends (and the feast was rather good too). Sometimes though, I really don’t feel like seeing any body or talking to any one. I get sick of talking about my PhD and how it’s all going… I also hate explaining what I’m doing to people… what’s a PhD, why I’m doing it, why am I not doing something useful like researching a cure for cancer. These sorts of conversations are inevitable – I mean, people are just trying to make conversation. But it gets old really fast when they ask these sorts of questions every single time they see me. I really can’t wait until it’s all over. That’s another thing I hate – going out on the weekend and finding myself secretly thinking about the chapter I’m currently working on. When that happens I try to muffle the brain’s activity with food… STOP THINKING AND JUST TASTE THIS.
