Melbourne Cup Day 2007

A couple of years ago I wrote about Melbourne Cup Day and lamented being part of a too-small office of PhD students – I missed working in a big office and taking part in sweeps and lunch and getting caught up in the excitement of the day. Well, as I now work in a reasonably-sized office, this year I got to experience all that fun again. I took part in the sweep and amazingly for the first time ever, my horses came first (Efficient) and second (Purple Moon)! First paid $30 and second paid $12, so I scored a total of $42. I’ve never won a sweep before, so I was pretty thrilled. I know Cellobella also won her office sweep – anyone else had some good luck with the Melbourne Cup this year?

For lunch, Chad organised platters of cold chicken and salad from MYO (a platter for $36 served six people) and drinks – champagne (with fresh strawberries) and orange juice for the non-booze drinkers like me. We were able to choose which three salads to have with our chicken, and we selected caesar, coleslaw and garden. Chad and I picked up the goodies from MYO and stashed them in my boss’ office – boss was due back from her meeting shortly and we all wanted to wait for her before tucking in. By this time, my stomach was growly as anything, and a few of my workmates were really hungry too – to avoid having to further delay the eating once my boss was back, I peeled off the Glad Wrap, took photos of everything, and put the Glad Wrap back on (that’s Glad Wrap you can see in the corner of the photo below!). The perfect crime. :)

Chicken and salad platter

MYO’s coleslaw has pineapple pieces in it – I like pineapple in otherwise savoury dishes, so I actually do like it being in the coleslaw, but even then I think it’s a strange inclusion.

Coleslaw close-up - it's got pineapple in it!

While taking the photos I cased out the platter and selected the piece of chicken I would make mine – that juicy chicken thigh, right there.

That's my chicken thigh... right there

My plate, with one big piece of juicy chicken thigh and a little of each of the salads. Stuck to the underside of my chicken was a pile of stuffing, yum!

My plate

Our platters came with pre-sliced bread rolls – basically one of these rolls per person, which really is quite a lot of bread! We valiantly ate as much as we could, but there was enough for my workmate R to take one roll home, and, since no one else wanted them, I took three home so Jac could make garlic bread. Regular readers will know how much I love Jac’s garlic bread.
