Brunch at Riley’s Wood Fired Cafe, Brentwood
We’re having brunch at Riley’s Wood Fired Cafe. It’s a cosy little cafe in a small shopping centre on Cranford Avenue in Brentwood, with a butcher and bottlo for neighbours. I wrote about dinner with friends at Riley’s in 2010.
Jac orders the field mushroom and spinach stack (AU$14.50). Two grilled field mushrooms are layered with wilted spinach on two slices of thick-cut lightly toasted Italian bread.

It’s not until later that we realise the dish was missing the hollandaise sauce mentioned in the menu description. On the day though, the mushrooms and spinach are so juicy and luscious that Jac doesn’t miss the sauce. Funnily enough, the first time we ate at Riley’s I really enjoyed my burger – but it was missing the bacon! Hopefully it won’t be third-time (un)lucky on our next visit, because apart from the missing elements, the food’s been very good.
I choose French toast with ice cream and maple syrup (AU$14.50). On my plate are three thick slices of French toast, a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a jug of maple syrup. I love it when a restaurant gives me the pleasure of pouring my own maple syrup. The French toast isn’t quite as eggy as I like, but it’s tasty doused in syrup.

According to Riley’s Wood Fired Cafe’s Facebook page, the cafe is now under new management who are referring to it as Riley’s on Cranford. At the time I took these photographs, the signs still read Riley’s Wood Fired Cafe. Hopefully any changes will make this neighbourhood gem sparkle even brighter.
