Potluck family dinner

With Jac’s brother (from Sydney) and Uncle N and Auntie K (from Brisbane) over for the weekend, we all got together on Saturday night at Jac’s brother B and his partner K’s house for a potluck family dinner. Jac and I were responsible for the nibblies. Jac made a crab dip, while I assembled the […]

Garlic bread

A couple of people recently asked how Jac made the garlic butter for the garlic bread (as featured on this recent post). Here’s the recipe: Garlic butter 200 grams of unsalted butter, softened 4 plump cloves’ worth of chopped garlic 2 teaspoons of chopped parsley Leave the butter out of the fridge for a few […]

Another Saturday

Hokkien mee with chicken (AU$9.50) from Sun Sun at Carousel Shopping Centre. I bought it takeaway, popped it in a bowl when I got home, swapped the disposable wooden chopsticks for a pair of our plastic ones and tucked in. I find the disposable wooden chopsticks you get with Chinese or Japanese takeaway annoyingly splintery, […]

Fish and salad Mondays

Monday night’s been fish and salad (or vegies) night for a while now. Last week’s Monday dinner was panfried fillets of red emperor with two salads. First, a pre-packed Greek-style salad (complete with mixed greens, red onion, olives and cubed feta cheese), to which Jac added sliced fresh cherry tomatoes. Second, a potato salad Jac [&he…

Meals at home

11/05/2008 – a fry-up for breakfast, with fried eggs, bacon, garlic mushrooms and tinned spaghetti. That’s ground black pepper on the eggs, by the way (it kind of looks like dirt, doesn’t it? :)). I don’t mind tinned spaghetti once in a while. Not a fan of having it on toast, though. Actually, I don’t […]

Work food – featuring the return of the long pizza

Monday – we grabbed lunches from Jaws Mint (323 Hay St, Corner of Hay and Hill Streets, East Perth, opposite the Perth Mint). Jaws Mint is open Mondays to Saturdays for dinner from 6pm, but they do takeaway lunches during the day. I’d recommend getting there early – we were there at around half past […]

Saturday food

Still running behind with posts! Here’s lunch from two Saturdays ago: we shared fried kway teow from Sun Sun at the Carousel Shopping Centre food hall. It seemed paler and less saucy than usual, and there was no fish cake or sliced beef in it. No fish cake! I was disappointed and dissatisfied. The chilli […]

Friday night dinner date (Carlisle Hotel and Baskin Robbins)

Jac took me out recently for a pub dinner at the Carlisle Hotel (174 Rutland Avenue, Carlisle). We began with a serve of garlic bread (AU$5.00). It was typical cafe-style garlic bread – pressed flat and toasted till golden and crisp on the outside, more buttery than garlicky in flavour, yet satisfyingly savoury. There was […]

Work lunches

Monday – in the previous week, Chad had met up with a friend for lunch at Mai’s Vietnamese Restaurant (51 Bennett St, East Perth) and she returned to the office with splendid tales of cheap and tasty lunch specials. J and I decided to check it out for ourselves. J chose the stewed beef with […]

Dinners at home

4/5/2008 – Jac panfried barramundi fillets which she’d coated in seasoned flour. She served them with mashed sweet potato and salad (sliced mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, lettuce and cucumber). The fish was imported barramundi from Woolworths. The delicate white flesh beneath the seasoned golden outer crust was exquisitely flaky and moist.…
